TOSLINK Square vs Rectangular

Why are there apparently two flavors of TOSLINK connectors? Although I’ve only ever seen a square one, apparently rectangular ones exist, at least on paper.

Apparently there is also a mini version thats like a 3.5mm jack.

Never used optical communication before. I guess you can pulse anything over it? I2C over optical.

A fellow over on Hackaday suggested an answer, and while I don’t have one of these “rectangular” modules to test, I think he’s onto the real reason. Some designs just have a huge hinge for the little dust-cover door. It takes up so much space that aperture becomes rectangular. Like a really thick garage door.

that makes sense… kinda. Wonder if there is a design patent that the rectangular one is trying to avoid?
